Introducing the Victorian Election Simulator

With the 2026 Victorian state election approaching, I’ve put together a new interactive simulator to explore how different election outcomes could look across the state.

The Victorian Election Simulator lets you experiment with seat-by-seat results and see how changing electoral outcomes can affect the overall makeup of Parliament. It’s a way to explore different scenarios, test assumptions and look beyond the usual Labor-versus-Coalition framing of election coverage.

A couple of features worth exploring:

  • Three-way swing pad: Adjust swings between the major parties and other candidates, either across the entire state or within individual regions, to see how different voting patterns could change the results.
  • Preference simulator: Explore how preferences can influence election outcomes, starting with previous election data as a baseline rather than building scenarios from scratch.
  • Seat demographics: Click on a seat to see the ABS data from the 2021 Census.

Whether you’re interested in the battle for government, the prospects of minor parties and independents, or simply curious about how the numbers could add up, the simulator offers a hands-on way to explore the possibilities.

The tool is still a work in progress, and there are a few bugs and rough edges to iron out. Treat the results as exploratory rather than definitive, and feedback or suggestions for improvements are welcome.
